the msvu hydroponic system
in the summer of 2018, the mount was donated a juiceplus+ tower garden hydroponic system by the adsum center. this project has been a year in the making but is finally up and running!. come on down to the rosaria cafeteria to see the system work in action! for more information, updates or inquires on the system, follow us on facebook (the mount community garden) or email the garden coordinator at: email@example.com
what is a hydroponic system?
hydroponics is a method of gardening that doesn’t utilize soil, rather it uses a nutrient-rich water based solution to nourish the plants.
how does it work?
seedlings, with established roots, are planted into the hydroponics system plant ports. their exposed roots give them access to a constant supply of oxygen, while they gain their nutrients from a water-based mineral solution. from the reservoir, a motorized pump pushes the nutrient solution to the top of the tower. the nutrient solution trickles down and feeds the plants as it drips back inside the reservoir.
are there any benefits to using a hydroponic system vs. traditional gardening?
while both methods are great, there are several advantages to using a hydroponics system. the main benefit is that plants can grow faster and more abundantly than with traditional gardening. due to the increased access to oxygen as well as not having to work as hard to gather nutrients, plants have an accelerated growth in the hydroponic system. the plants are also able to grow larger than in traditional gardening, which is again, contributed to the easy access to nutrients. other benefits of the system include year-round gardening, a controlled environment for your plants and requiring less resources (i.e. water) due to it being an enclosed system (little/no water evaporation).
