good afternoon,

as we shared with you earlier this week, the university is currently in negotiations with the mount saint vincent university faculty association to reach a new collective agreement. the association represents permanent full-time faculty, term faculty, librarians, and lab instructors.

earlier today, the board of governors filed for conciliation through the nova scotia department of labour and advanced education. while a significant amount of progress has been made in negotiations to date, we feel that the current environment makes further negotiations difficult and filing for conciliation is the most responsible course of action. the skills that a conciliator will bring to the table will move the process forward in a healthy, constructive manner.

what is conciliation?
conciliation is the process of intervention in collective bargaining by a neutral third party knowledgeable in effective negotiation procedures. this third party is called a “conciliator” and their role is to assist employers and unions in reaching mutually agreeable solutions to outstanding issues. conciliators are appointed by the minister of labour and advanced education (or a delegate) at the written request of one or both parties to collective bargaining.

the conciliator assists the parties to resolve their outstanding issues, promotes a climate of non-adversarial dispute resolution, and suggests ideas/options for the parties’ consideration, but will not attempt to impose any settlement.

keeping you informed
in order to keep all members of the mount community, including students and parents, informed and updated, the mount has developed a labour relations hub on the mount’s website. in this area of the site you’ll find information about faculty and staff relations, steps in the conciliation process, as well as updates on current negotiations.

students are the mount’s top priority, and we want to ensure the mount is positioned for continued success and to deliver an excellent student experience. we remain committed to the collective bargaining process and working with the faculty association to reach a settlement.
